§ 2-273. Rounding of fractions.

Latest version.
  • When the vote required to carry a motion is greater than a majority vote and the computation of the voting requirement results in a fraction, the fraction shall be rounded to the next higher whole number for the purpose of determining the number of votes required. For example, if there are four (4) council members in attendance at a meeting, and a two-thirds ( 2/3 ) vote of only those members in attendance is required, the computation would result in a fraction two and two-thirds (2 2/3 ) which would be rounded to the next higher number three (3), and three (3) affirmative votes would be required. Similarly, if a two-thirds ( 2/3 ) vote of the full council is required, the resulting fraction three and one-third (3 1/3 ) would be rounded to four (4), and four (4) votes would be required.
